Dancer and choreographer Edward Clug was born in 1973 in Romania. From 1983 until 1991 he studied classical ballet at the National Ballet School in Cluj – Napoca. He joined the Ballet of Slovene National Theatre Maribor in 1991 as a soloist. In 2003 he was also appointed Head of Ballet of Slovenian National Theatre Maribor.

His first notable choreography was created in 1996 for the performance Babylon (directed by Tomas Pandur, Drama of Slovene National Theatre Maribor). In 1997 he created a choreographic miniature One which was awarded Special Prize of the 3rd National Ballet Competition in Ljubljana, in 1998 he created choreography for closing ceremony of Cultural capital of Europe in Thessaloniki, Greece and in 1998 Tango, his first dance project for Ballet of Slovene National Theatre Maribor, was created, which was awarded the “Dance performance of the year awarded by the Slovene Ballet Dancers Association DBUS. Next was the choreography for Silence of the Balkans by Goran Bregovic (opening of the Aarhus Festival, Denmark, 1999), followed by Bachelorette, dance project for Ballet of the Slovene National Theatre Ljubljana, Palermo by Goran Bregovic (opening of the Santa Rosalia Festival, Italy, 2000) and Amadeus (directed by Sebastjan Horvat, Drama of Slovene National Theatre Maribor). In 2001 he created Solo for Two Chairs for Ochi International Ballet Company (Japan), in 2002 First Letter & P.S. for the 4th International Ballet and Modern Dance Competition in Nagoya (Japan), as well as choreography for Hazarski Slovar (Dictionary of the Khazars), Maribor was created in 2002, which in 2003 he also staged at the Ochi International Ballet Festival in Nagoya, Japan.

For his choreographies Edward Clug was awarded numerous national and international awards: Special Prize for thechoreographic miniature One (SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana, 1997), First Class Distinction for Best Contemporary Choreography of the last 5 years for Blind Tango (International Ballet Competition Varna, Bulgaria, 1998), Best Dance Performance of the Year 1999 for Tango (DBUS, Slovenia), Special Prize for best choreography for Tango at the 3rd International Ballet Competition in Nagoya, Japan (1999). In the year 2000 he won the “Povodni mo_” award for Bachelorette, in 2001 his Solo for Two Chairs was awarded 3. Prize at the International Ballet Competition in Moscow (Russia) and in 2003 he won the 3rd Prize as well as Audience Prize at the 17th International Choreographers Competition in Hannover (Germany) as well as the Dance Performance of the Year award (DBUS, Slovenia) for Lacrimas.

With his performances he regularly tours Slovenia and abroad: Croatian National Theatre Zagreb (Zagreb, Croatia), International Festival “Sarajevska zima” (Sarajevo, Bosnia), International Summer Festival (Dubrovnik, Croatia), Tanztheater Festival (Graz, Austria), BITEF Festival (Belgrade, Serbia and Monte Negro), International Summer Festival (Ljubljana, Slovenia), Splitsko ljeto Festival (Split, Croatia). In 2004 his Lacrimas was performed with notable success in Karlsruhe (Germany) and Podgorica (Serbia and Monte Negro) and in the same year he was invited to present his work at the Monaco Dance Forum and in 2005 at the Second International Dance Platform in Volos, Greece. In 2005 he was also awarded most important Slovenian award for achievements in culture, Preseren Foundation Award (Presernova Nagrada).
