Ballet Master and Choreographer

Pavel Rotaru has achieved an international reputation as a ballet master, choreographer, and former principal dancer. His Vaganova background, artistry, and vision have earned the respect of professionals, students, and audiences around the world.

Mr. Rotaru began his ballet training at age nine in Romania and furthered his studies at Russia’s renowned Kirov Theatre. He was principal dancer with the Romanian National Opera Ballet in Bucharest for most of his career. He was also principal dancer, choreographer and teacher for the Croatian National Opera Ballet in Zagreb from 1979 to 1982. After relocating to the United States he was the leading dancer for Pacific Northwest Ballet in Seattle and Atlanta Ballet in Georgia. During his 27-year performing career he has danced as a guest artist with major companies throughout Europe and Russia. By invitation of Alicia Alonso, he performed in the National Ballet Festival of Cuba.

As a choreographer, Mr. Rotaru is highly regarded. He achieved worldwide acclaim at the 1979 Finland Festival for his choreography for Camerata Coregrafica, a volunteer company he founded and directed while performing as principal dancer for the Romanian National Opera Ballet. He founded International Ballet Rotaru, a professional company in Atlanta, and choreographed and/or staged most of the company’s extensive repertoire that included Swan Lake, Giselle,
Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet, Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, Carmen, Les Sylphides, City Beat, and others. In 1999 he choreographed and staged The Four Seasons for the Croatian National Ballet.

For over twenty years, Mr. Rotaru directed the Rotaru International Ballet School in the Atlanta area. His students have competed in international competitions and have graduated to become professional dancers with companies such as Boston Ballet, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Houston Ballet, and Colorado Ballet. In 1992, five of the nine United States competitors at the International Ballet Competition in Varna were his students.

Mr. Rotaru has received numerous awards and honors for his contribution to the arts in Atlanta and from his native Romania. By invitation of the Romanian government, International Ballet Rotaru performed in Romania in 1991. The tour was filmed by Georgia Public Television in an Emmy-nominated documentary. The company also performed in Atlanta in a collaborative production with the Stars of the Bolshoi in 1994. Mr. Rotaru produced a volunteer benefit in Atlanta in 1996 to support the Children of the World Foundation for Romanian orphans. The performance was attended by Her Majesty, The Queen Anne of Romania, who made a rare visit to the United States for the event. In 1999 Romanian President Emil Constantinescu personally presented Mr. Rotaru with an award in Atlanta for his distinguished contribution to the arts and culture of Romania. In 2002 he received the highest award given to an artist in Romania. The Order of Chevalier was presented to him personally by Romanian President Ion Iliescu at a gala ballet performance in Bucharest. Mr. Rotaru has also received commendations from three Atlanta mayors and in 2005 was nominated as “Man of the Year” by Atlanta Woman magazine.
